Alvin Tjitrowirjo has been one of the latest thrills in Indonesian design scene. Known by his originality, his modern,
sophisticated, and stylish lifestyle products have anticipated the talk of the town due to its unusual organic designs,
which ranges from furniture, lighting, accessories, and even jewelries. Strongly influenced by retro-futurism and a
slight touch of avant-garde, his designs uniquely incorporate both industrial and traditional materials such as aluminum,
stainless steel, wood, and even rattan. It makes one wonder how did the 1983 Indonesian born designer successfully
leveled himself amongst the top local designers; ensuring a prospectus future within the constantly evolved design milieu
both in local and international scale. Truly different from others, certainly more advanced, evidently classy, and
definitely romantic; undoubtedly Alvin has become the town’s unstoppable new favorite young designer.
Before graduating as a Bachelor of Industrial Design (2004) from the well-reputed RMIT University, he joined the Melbourne
Movement during the course of his study in Melbourne, Australia. Founded by the internationally acclaimed designer, Kjell
Grant, Melbourne Movement is an organization that solely promotes Young Australian Designers which to his own surprise has
selected one of his prototypes, the Bell Chair, to be exhibited in one of the world’s leading furniture fair, Milan
Salone Satellite in 2005. Following the success of Milan within the same year, Snug, another of his retro-futuristic
furniture piece was displayed in Melbourne Design-EX. Subsequently in 2006, Snug participated in Saturday in Design event
as a part of its Launch Pad Exhibition which took place in Melbourne Museum. Such talent, style, and class have granted
this piece the award as one of the Top Five Favorite Designs chosen by the professional jury panels.
Upon his return to Indonesia, Alvin joined Dform, a non-profit organization which aims to promote Indonesian designs. Aside
from this, he also worked for Chamdani, as a product developer for a furniture design manufacturer which had participated
in IMM Cologne and Zona Tortona Milan 2006. In June 2006, Alvin held his first solo exhibition entitled “alvin+volvo”
which was sponsored by the prominent Swedish car brand as well as other leading commercial brands such as DuPont Corian by MAS
and The Hour Glass. The exhibition truly was a bold statement of his commitment and passion for design as it indisputably earned
him such respect from other fellow designers, the media, and the public itself.
Since then, Alvin has been involved with several collaboration projects, working alongside Indonesia’s top architects
to fashion designers. Alvin currently is a part-time lecturer of furniture and interior design in the Faculty of Design at
University of Pelita Harapan, one of the top private Universities in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Ultimately, Alvin’s passion for design and his sense of curiosity are the basis of his motivation to constantly challenge
his creativity in many ways. To aspire to be a good designer means having the urge to explore other subject interests, which
would enrich one’s knowledge with a myriad of inspirations. Alvin strongly believes in this philosophy of life and
continuously strives to learn, evolve, and develop his visions through his designs. The potential beauty of Alvin’s
simplistic design falls on how he is able to acknowledge both the past and the future without being too pretentious; which is a
genuine reflection of his own positivism to what lies ahead in the future without forgetting the past though relies on truly
embracing the present. Distinct and innovative are surely the illustrative words that come into mind when confronted with such
designs. |
