Our third collaboration with SANIHARTO

What makes a design timeless? Is it the form itself, the craft behind it, or its ability to remain relevant as the way we live continues to change?

With Timeless Silhouettes, our third collaboration with SANIHARTO, we return to these questions through a collection that explores familiar forms, inherited craft, and changing ways of living. Following New Age Luxury in 2017 and Objects of Living in 2023, this collaboration continues our conversation with SANIHARTO on how established references and traditional craftsmanship can find new meaning in contemporary life.

At the heart of the collection is a question: What do we choose to carry forward?

As the ways we live continue to evolve, we are interested in what allows certain objects, forms, and ways of making to remain relevant. We see timelessness not as something that remains unchanged, but as the ability of a design to find its place again and again as the lives around it change.

This thinking takes shape through familiar furniture references reconsidered for today. New proportions explore classical silhouettes, Asian lattice patterns translate into intricate marquetry, and traditional woodworking finds expression through sculpted details. Modularity, meanwhile, responds to the increasingly fluid ways we inhabit our homes.

The collection brings together four distinct designs, each exploring a different relationship between form, material, and use.

At the center of the collection is Dawan. Dawan explores the balance between generous upholstered forms and precise timber structures. At its centre is the Dawan Modular Sofa, which can be composed in different configurations to respond to different spaces, occasions, and ways of gathering. The family also includes a club armchair, dining armchair, and bar stool, extending the same design language across different moments of living.

Inspired by Henry David Thoreau's Walden, the lounge chair reflects on simplicity and intentional living. We distilled the familiar wooden chair archetype into considered lines and essential elements, bringing together an exposed timber frame and soft upholstery.

Across these designs, we explore how familiar silhouettes can be reconsidered without losing the qualities that make them endure. The intention is not to reproduce forms of the past, but to understand what gives them lasting value and how they can acquire new relevance through material, proportion, and use.

Our collaboration with SANIHARTO makes this exploration possible through a shared appreciation for design and craftsmanship. With SANIHARTO's expertise in woodworking, marquetry, finishing, and furniture manufacturing, established techniques become a foundation for further exploration. The dialogue between design and making allows familiar references to be interpreted in new ways while retaining the knowledge and precision behind them.

Drawing from the geometric language of Asian latticework, Lattice translates a familiar architectural reference into a dining table. Intricate marquetry creates a rhythmic pattern across its expansive tabletop, balanced by sculpted legs that give the piece a grounded architectural presence.

Taking inspiration from the elemental presence of totems, Sarra is composed of stacked timber volumes that create its sculptural silhouette. A lacquered top surface introduces a polished contrast to the wood's natural grain and tactile quality.

For us, Timeless Silhouettes is part of an ongoing exploration of contemporary Indonesian design: how we draw from what already exists, reinterpret it through our own perspective, and carry it forward into the way we live today.

The past is not something we need to return to unchanged. It is something we can continue to learn from, build upon, and make relevant to the present.
